That injury was awful, but let’s be real: Martin Atkinson totally invented that red card because he panicked and guessed it was the right thing to do.

Did Martin Atkinson change his mind from a yellow to a red after seeing the horrific injury to Gomes?
Did VAR bother to review it?
Do they even know their own rules?
The officiating on and off the pitch was a joke.
Absolute farce.#THFC #COYS #EVETOT

Atkinson had a yellow card in his hand but changed it to red when he saw severity of the Gomes injury. Surely VAR had to look at it ? Freak accident and in no way Son’s fault. pic.twitter.com/SyKNizR2zh

Horrific Gomes and Everton but Son clearly not at fault. As VAR made all the other big decisions for Atkinson you’d have thought they’d have helped him out with that one.

#thfc Our sympathies belong to Gomes but obvious questions about how and why Son was sent off when Atkinson felt it was initially a yellow card.

Something tells me Martin Atkinson is going to have a nice, relaxing weekend off soon.

Also the VAR officials had plenty of time to advise Atkinson of what actually happened. Seems to me he looked at the injury and then went on emotion.
