Open letter to the Mayor of Reykjavik, Dagur Eggertsson:
Dear Dagur,
I have followed this boycott issue in the international media. At first it was exciting, and daring, and had the effect of drawing attention to a simple civic action: that of demonstrating rejection of economic policies created by an Occupying Power.
Then it became an obsessive hate campaign by Zionists claiming a „volcano of hate“ was erupting in Iceland and thus should be countered by an economic boycott of Iceland.
Later on it morphed into an abase crawling financial issue of economic loss by some political „leaders“ who saw profits for their friends drop because „200 complaints“ had been received by the nation’s embassy in Washington. Followed quickly by a bank manager fearing loss on an investment in a luxury hotel.
Where, I thought to myself, was the moral integrity of a nation that supported the rule of law, that stood by the countless United Nations resolutions condemning illegal occupation and exploitation by one Member State of its neighbour?
The Reykjavik City Council resolution for a boycott of items manufactured by Israeli firms operating in the Occupied Territories was not against the State of Israel, its citizens as a whole or Judaism as a faith, so why the uproar?
Why has the rational, honourable and totally to be expected support for moral outrage against exploitation and oppression been forgotten?
My faith remains with the people of Iceland and its capital. My hope is that you will not be deterred from your noble act.
I await your decision in suspense.
Sincerely,
Mikael Magnusson, just another citizen
