This is a long sad story. The bankers who set up the Icesave and Edge
account used the money mainly to invest in UK as far as we know. When
we look into numbers and facts now after the collapse we can see that
actually none of this money ever came to Iceland. It was mainly
„invested“ in UK by Icelandic or British businessmen. That is why
people of Iceland in general is not at all happy to pay for this mess.
We never saw this money and feel that we should not pay back what we
never got. The fact is that a few Icelandic „businessmen“ along with
theyr British collegues and friends made this huge amounts of money
evaporate in theyr business. That is something that UK and Icelandic
governments should be looking seriously into. I can not understand why
no one has been put in jail or at least properly out of business
because of those huge losses. The total value of Iceland according to
the Icelandic Property Registry is about 21 billion pounds but the
total losses in the Icelandic banking system meltdown seems to be of
the size of 50-70 billion pounds. So in few words, the bankers have
lost Iceland completely, three times!! We estimate that only 2-3% of
the money lost is actually lost in Iceland. 97-98% have been lost in
UK and in other countries. This is why we say we did never see this
money. This is whay we find it strange that everyone in charge is
still walking free. This is probably why the UK government used the
terrorist act at the beginning of the meltdown. This is why we do not
want to pay more than we are obliged to by international law and this
is why we can not pay everything that has been lost in this meltdown.
And this is why the UK government and Icelandic government should be
freezing assets of those businessmen involved and putting them in jail
for a long time. This is why the money should be traced and
confiscated and given back to its original owners instead of asking a
few people in Iceland to pay back more than ever
.“
